Your team at Mark E. Richardson, DDS, has been out and about in Kalamazoo again! We love interacting with and giving back to our community through outreach programs. We want to share some of the important activities we've been up to—Kalamazoo Dental Day of Caring and Kids Dental Health Month. Here are some interviews with Dr. Richardson on what we did while we were out!
Kalamazoo Dental Day of Caring
We're talking with Dr. Richardson about his participation in Kalamazoo Dental Day of Caring.
What Inspired You to Volunteer for the Kalamazoo Dental Day of Caring?
I appreciate that I can help the underserved in the Kalamazoo community. These individuals could be uninsured and may not have access to dental care, directly impacting their health and well-being. I love that I can give back to the community that supports my practice. Volunteering is rewarding, and I can use my skills to make an immediate difference in people's lives. It reminds me of the impact that dentistry has on quality of life. Lastly, I enjoy setting a positive example for my dental team.
How Does Your Participation in This Event Impact the Community?
Along with other dental professionals, I help individuals who may have delayed or avoided treatment due to financial constraints. This reduces their risk of developing more severe health issues and improves their quality of life. Many people in Kalamazoo lack access to regular dental care. This day also helps educate people about the importance of dental hygiene and maintenance. It's a win for everyone involved!
Kids Dental Health Month
Dr. Richardson also participates in Kids Dental Health Month, ensuring our future generations are educated about the importance of dental health.
What Do You Aim to Achieve During Dental Screenings and Educational Sessions?
During the school dental screenings, I can identify dental problems, which helps prevent more serious issues and ensures that children receive the treatment they need. I also educate children on proper brushing and flossing techniques. By engaging with them, I help encourage routine dental visits, aiding my neighbors through community involvement.
How Important Is Early Education in Dental Health?
The younger children are taught about good oral hygiene; the more likely good habits will develop, leading to fewer problems later in life.
What Advice Do You Give Students?
I teach them how to brush and floss correctly and talk about foods that are good for their teeth and those that aren’t. I show them x-rays, the anatomy of a tooth, and what a filling looks like on the x-ray.
Which Schools Do You Partner With?
This varies every year. In the past, I have visited schools in Holland and Kalamazoo, Michigan. I also do school screenings for preschoolers at Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency.
